Our trip to Sydney opened our eyes to true industrialized design with raw, organic and natural elements that transpire into inspirational beauty. There is a wide use of Hawkesbury Sandstone throughout this spectacular city's architecture. This stone was formed from the sands which came from Antarctica about 200 million years ago, carried by a vast river system over millions of years these sands were consolidated into sandstone up to 50 metres thick throughout the cities peninsula. The natural weathering of the stone forms these beautiful earth-toned streaks of browns, yellows and reds that effortlessly intertwine with each other.
We explored various districts within Sydney discovering their unique, quirky individuality each offering an artistic spirit of their own from the urban jungle to classy streets, vibrant colours to industrial erosion and exquisite weathered textures.
In need of a refreshment after a long day on our feet we came across one of Sydney?s infamous hotels: The Establishment Hotel it really is all in the name as it is quite the establishment, nestled amidst holes in the wall bars, lively cafes and above some of Sydney?s best restaurants. Once a prestigious publishing house in the 1930s of which the rustic pillars and cast-iron fixtures still remain and retain its character. This architectural design really highlights the amazing integration of the old mixed with the new, adding to the ongoing history of the building as a whole. Restore and integrate rather than destroy and rebuild.
The absolute cherry on top of our trip was welcoming in a new year on the Sydney Harbour front witnessing Sydney's world-famous New Year's Eve firework display. Hundreds of boats flocked to the docks outlined with colourful beaming lights that added to the pop of colour amongst the magical breathtaking fireworks - what a night to remember!
